“When life gives you limes, make margaritas!”
Ladies & Gentlemen, Amigos y Amigas, prepare to start your blenders! It’s MARGARITA time!
And YES, ahem, I do realize it’s only April and I’m talking margaritas, but Cinco de Mayo (and summer!) is right around the corner and you folks need to be prepared to “par-tay”!
Ahhh the refreshing marvelous margarita with its yin and yang of salty sweet flavors makes it the “number one” enjoyed cocktail on beaches, bars and patios all over the world. A bit of mystery and controversy surrounds the iconic margarita as no one has solid proof of who created it or when & when, but rumour has it that it was created sometime in the ’40’s by a bartender in Esenada, Mexico. The first mention of the beloved margarita was in a magazine stating… ‘She’s from Mexico, Señores, and she is lovely to look at, exciting and provocative’. Ain’t that the truth…Regardless of where the margarita came from, people around the world give thanks for this wonderful concoction!
Having returned from Playa del Carmen (MX) a few months ago, I’ve come to the conclusion that no one in my neck of the woods can make a proper margarita. Margaritas should not be YELLOW people! I think once I even detected a hint of Sprite in my margarita? Blasphemy!
A good margarita, like a perfectly boiled egg seems simple enough to make right? However, few people, including bartenders can to do it well…
A margarita is an amazing symphony of salt & tart along with a nice kick (¡Ay, caramba!) with NARY a drop of lime syrup or powdered mix in sight. Just the way the Mexican gods intended it; on the rocks with authentic ingredients, and made from scratch! Ultimately the secret to a perfect margarita is balance of flavors so be my guest, make a few, try a few and you’ll find your own perfect recipe!!
So on that note…are you ready to make the best darn margarita ever? Alrighty then let’s get started and head on over to Margaritaville!
Best Darn Margarita Ever
1 ½-2 ounces Silver Tequila (use 100% Agave & save yourself a bad headache!)
3/4 ounce of Cointreau or Controy (the Mexican version – yum!)
1 1/2 ounces freshly squeezed lime juice
Kosher salt (opens up the taste buds!)
Lime slices
Lounge Chair (optional!)
Tip of the day: roll the lime against the counter with your palm to soften it and release the juices. Slice in half and use any gadget you have to squeeze the fresh lime as long as you don’t open a bottle of syrupy lime juice!
- Moisten a glass with a lime rind then dip the glass into a bowl of kosher salt.
- Combine fresh lime juice, Tequila, and Cointreau into a cocktail shaker, add ice and shake!
- Fill the salt-rimmed glass with ice and strain the margarita over it. Add a garnish of a lime wedge if you care to, but that’s just wasting precious drinking time 🙂 Stretch out on a lounger and sip till your heart’s content!
- Bottoms up! ¡salud!
