‘Good health is that thing you take for granted until it is not there anymore.’
For many of us it’s difficult to imagine not having use of our legs and being confined to a wheelchair restricted from going places or doing things because there’s no wheelchair access. Or dealing with a physical disability that prevents us from getting around with ease.
The true lure of a tropical vacation is the beach. So imagine booking a vacation to the charming Caribbean coastal town of Playa del Carmen (“Playa) whose admirers sings its praises for its sparkling turquoise waters and soft sandy beaches and not be able to experience its warm ocean breezes and restorative waters because there’s no wheelchair access?
Sadly this is the case for a significant number of our population who are excluded from engaging in this fantastic beach experience with their families and friends.
But all that’s about to change as the state of Quintana Roo has initiated the design of a wheelchair accessible beach and water park that is in the works to be completed this winter 2013 which will be the first of its kind in Mexico! (We’ll update the details as they become known to us!)
This beach will be located at Founder’s Park in the south end of Playa and will accommodate both adults and children who have reduced mobility. There will be a wheelchair access ramp, beach chairs, aquatic wheelchairs for children and adults, and water walkers.
This is the best news I’ve heard since doughnuts got jelly! I tip my hat (or should I say my sombrero 😉 to the Quintana Roo Government for constructing this much-needed facility.
I smile when I think of all those children that previously had to sit on the beach sidelines who will now experience the waves lapping at their toes and splashing freely in the water park. And I expect a few adults will feel like kids again with this new sense of beach freedom!
Playa del Carmen is a fantastic holiday destination, but now it will be even more of an attraction thanks to its forward-thinking in providing beach accessibility for differently-abled and special needs travelers.
Now people from all over the world regardless of their physical health can have a blast on the beaches of Playa. The enjoyment and benefits of breaking down this barrier will change the lives of many. Hip-hip hurray!
